My Grandfather gave me this in 1965 or '66. He told me about the saw-back's being filed off by the Germans, so that their captured soldiers would not be killed on the spot with them in their possession. Apparently that was true. I now know that it was used by the Pioneer Battalions where its saw back was used as a brush cutter, and saw.The pictures show the words on the blade (each on it's own line): WEYERSBERG, KIRSCHBAUM, (a funny series of symbols that looks like 8c C
1E
, then SOLINGEN. The top of the grip is the old or early (a.A) style with the high ears and no flash guard. There are also some little symbols stamped at the base of the blade at the top that I believe indicate that it was made in 1915 under the rule of Kaiser Wilhelm II. The Sheath has this stamped in the metal at it's top, facing out: P.B.6. 138 (Pioneer Battalion). Blade length is 368mm, with an overall length of 500mm.
The item is in very good condition.
